A land you'll fall in love with

The Nation

Thailand is a country one can easily fall in love with. It’s no Sri Lanka, but it is quite like our sun-kissed island. Our first taste of Thailand is in the airport. The Suvarnabumi airport was designed to confuse you. The large airport is a small hint of what Thailand has in store for you.

As a country that is littered with skyscrapers and stores of many leading brands, Thailand lacks one important thing; language. You are all well and good if you know Thai, or enough Thai to get around. However, your English will do you very little good in the country where not many can speak or even understand the language. I was amazed when I saw the insides of a hospital. Machines are not outdated and nearly everything is done through computers. There is the usual hustle and bustle of hospitals. Yet, the system is incredibly quick and convenient. However, the nurses and other staff members knew very little English, making communication an exhausting exercise.

However, this will not stop you from enjoying the amazing country. It is the perfect country for shopping. Shopping malls can be easily found in Bangkok, and one can find anything from electronics to clothes under one roof. Getting about is easy too, just hop in a taxi or the BTS system.

What makes Thailand a really good holiday destination for me is the food. You have many options such as Middle Eastern, Japanese or the local cuisine. If you are a fan of seafood, Thailand is the place for you. Shrimp, fish, cuttlefish or oysters, Thailand offers a wide range of delicacies. Small carts along roads offer many dishes, from fried to boiled food. However, if Thai cuisine doesn’t interest you, there is always Subway, McDonalds or KFC to cater to your needs. Cafes are quite common and the fragrance of fresh coffee is always in the air. No matter how lost or bored you might be in Thailand, I can assure you that you will never be hungry.

Thailand is at face value, quite an Utopia. While one may think the Buddhist country will be conservative, it is miles ahead of many Asian countries. Women stay out till later and often wear quite short clothes. However, they take clothing to another level by wearing their nightclothes in public. Thus Thailand offers you two kinds of people, those who are dressed to impress and those who seem to not know why pajamas are called night clothes.

It also seems like Thais are closer to being robots than most of us. Many would sit in malls texting or playing games on their phones or tabs.

Sadly, Thailand is more like a concrete country. The rural areas are quite lovely and they resemble Sri Lanka. However, the cities are absolutely horrifying. Everything is made of concrete. Of course the highways make traveling much easier. The streets are often infested with heavy traffic. Taxis, cars, pick-up trucks and SUVs do not hesitate to suffocate you with their existence.

The country also offers lovely beaches and water sports. During the day, tours are offered to various places. During the night, one can find a lovely place for dinner, the sea breeze cool and comfortable. It is then that one gets to enjoy the quiet and calm Thailand, which the cities do not offer.

Thailand has  many ups and downs. Regardless of them all, it is easy to find the language and nation familiar. However, even as I enjoy a dish of fried seafood, I will miss the simplicity of rice, dhal and a sambol. Thailand is quite like Sri Lanka, but, it is not. No matter how much we complain about this island, no country will be like home to us.
