Happy Father's Day

Image
If you are in anyway exposed to advertisements, you've already been told about father's day and you've already been told what you should get for your father. Father's day, I feel, isn't as big as mother's day but it is getting there. Anyway, reminded by companies and whatnot about this incredibly important day, people suddenly feel the need to speak about the love they have for their fathers. But not really to their father. Sometimes the father is tagged in the post on social media but usually he isn't because most people prefer to pretend they don't know what Facebook is rather than add a parent on social media. But why be negative? Father's day is a great reminder that fathers are important. And I'm not going to say that father's day is every single day because honestly, I don't even talk to my father everyday. And that's not a bad thing. When I was younger, I thought that a father must talk to their kids everyday and that if he d...

Happiness: Forty rupees only

Image
I didn’t wake up feeling happy. I had a dream about penguins but the alarm went off and that was a bad start to the day. Then I was grumpy and generally moody. This isn’t all that new to my life but it has worsened thanks to headaches that not even Panadeine can scare away. I was still close to tears when I left home and walked to the bus halt. I got in to a bus feeling moody. A couple was seated in the seat before mine and their general behavior pissed me off further. It was sunny too and I was trying to decide if I should just go back home and forget office. Then a man got into the bus. Somewhere in Wellawatte, I think. He was somewhat old and carried a guitar with him. He sang a song and played the guitar. His voice was deep and rich and the song was just beautiful. He made me smile. I was seated in a bus, the sun burning my face and hands but I was overwhelmed by happiness. The moment of takeoff when you are in a plane can be incredibly exhilarating. You a...

A list: What I will get done by December 31st, 2016

Image
This year sure has been a mixture of good, bad and interesting. For all of today and the few days leading to today, I thought we were already in May and then realized that April wasn’t ready to say goodbye to us just yet. Since May might be a month of many changes in my life, I thought of putting together a list for the rest of the year. Which doesn't make too much sense unless you've abandoned your blog for too long and feel super guilty. What I will get done by December 31 st , 2016 Night Owls* The story behind Night Owls is simple. While at The Nation, I handled Free, the youth section, and my friend handled Jeans, the kids section. We both loved our little magazines. For close to two years, we sat next to each other in office (less than two years? But it sure feels like forever), we contributed to each others sections and we went on quite a few amazing assignments. Things changed and at the end of last year, we found ourselves without our ‘b...
My main mood is cranky while I'm sometimes all happy and excited and talkative. And it's a pity when people meet me during my off days and think I'm this person who is super excited to be alive. But they, at some point, meet me when I'm in my usual mood. Their natural reaction is to say I've changed and ask me what's wrong. But they refuse to accept that I am cranky 90% of my life. And then they tell me to go back to being the person they know. They refuse to accept that I don't have a choice in the matter. Explaining it to them is of no use because the conversation keeps going in circles. And also because, if my behavior causes no harm to me or anyone else, I don't see why I need to explain myself to anyone. It makes no sense that we search for happiness with such passion. But while chasing after happiness, we often forget that the opposite of happiness isn't sadness. And that not being happy (outwardly happy, that is) isn't a bad ...

"If I woke up in a different body every day..."

Image
goodreads *Includes Every Day spoilers* Every Day by David Levithan was in my ebooks folder for quite a while but I just couldn’t find any interest. I loved all Levithan books I’ve read; Boy Meets Boy, The Lover’s Dictionary etc. For some reason Every Day just didn't grab my attention. But for some reason I started reading it. I think this was mostly because I saw a quote from it on Tumblr and wondered why I wasn’t reading a book with such beautiful words. So I read it and of course, I love it. Every Day is a story about A. A wakes up in a different body everyday. Today A is a Chinese girl living in America and tomorrow A is a metalhead. Since this has been happening since birth, A is now used to the whole deal. By assessing the memories attached to the body, A can be that person for the day. Then A falls in love with Rhiannon and things get complicated. "This is hard for me.     I have gotten so used to what I am, and how my life work...

What schools should teach us

Image
What Your Schools Didn’t Teach You is the title of an opinion-piece by Thisuri Wanniarachchi, published in Colombo Telegraph. The article was liked by some and disliked by others. There are a few issues with what Wanniarachchi writes. Not all of it is crap as most point out, but the article seems lazy, in my opinion. 1. First of all: School is one (very important) step of the way. Life doesn’t end there, but it still matters School is where most of my memories are. When I am older, these will be the memories I remember the most. I love the university I attend and I love the degree I follow. I also love my job and all the people I meet and know. But there’s something much more special about childhood and school. Both schools I attended are places I love and feel a connection to when I pass by. School is important. We may be ‘just kids’ when we are in school, but without that immaturity, there can’t be maturity. We may look back at all the silly things we did as ki...

Solitude.

My favorite thing about staying out till late is the cab ride back home. I don’t have to worry about driving or traffic and most drivers I’ve had to deal with haven’t been talkative. This usually gives me an hour of silence to look at the world around me as it is swallowed by darkness. Streetlights and lights of buildings give me hints of what surrounds me. I see the greenish yellow of a branch or the too-yellow framed ‘බුදු සරණයි’ or ‘දෙවි පිහිටයි.’ I see faces and vehicles, briefly and quietly. Being alone during such taxi rides back home calm me. They give me time to think and just be without having to impress others or please them. No one matters when it’s just you in a cozy car being driven home. I like being alone. I like sitting at a café booth, sipping my coffee and reading. I like listening to the soft music or the sounds of the world around me. I like being left alone. And it’s not a bad thing. Not always. Sometimes you need the time off from the world. Sometimes e...
